Connection Hardware
There are many kinds of connection hardware that are used to connect to the internet. These types of connection hardware vary across a wide range of speeds. While many people are still using older types of connection hardware today for dial up internet, faster kinds of connection hardware have become prevalent enough that they cost very little, and you can easily surf the world wide web at high speeds without having to pay a lot of money. Here are some details on the kinds of connection hardware that people use today!
The earliest kind of internet connection hardware for many people was the modem, and it is still widely used today for dial up internet. Originally, modems transferred data at speeds of 2400 baud or lower, growing through the nineties until they stopped around 56.6 kilo baud. 56.6k is a data transfer speed that is still considered the standard for dial up internet today. It is fast enough to read the web, although at a very slow speed, and it is convenient for checking email. Many people have moved on to faster forms of internet, however, as modems are no longer significantly cheaper than other faster forms of internet access.
For many people today, the superior connection hardware is a DSL modem or DSL wireless access point. By connecting a DSL access point to a line that has been activated with a DSL signal, you can connect to the internet at any time without interrupting or affecting phone service. The internet signal is sent over the ordinary phone lines using an inaudible part of the bandwidth, and filtered out with a special filtering device. DSL doesn't require a lot of difficult installation, and once you get it running you can easily set up a wireless access point to connect to the internet from all over your home whenever you want. This kind of internet connection hardware is also relatively inexpensive today, with plans costing around the same amount that modem based internet plans did in the early 90s.
Other kinds of internet connection hardware that people use now include cable modems, which are even faster than DSL in most cases and take their internet signal off of the same cable from which you get your cable TV. As many people have cable TV already installed and cable TV providers want to get into the internet service provider game as well, these people are often offered special deals with lower prices to get both internet access and cable programming on the same bill. Finally, there are other kinds of more expensive but super fast connection such as satellite internet. With all of these options, it is easy to find connection hardware that is in your price and speed range!
