ISP :: Connection Hardware :: DSL Modem

DSL is one of the most popular new internet technologies in the country (and around the world). It has found the perfect balance between high speed and price point, and is almost universally available because all you need for a DSL connection is your existing telephone line and a good local provider. What is DSL? DSL stands for digital subscriber line; it is simply a kind of internet connection using a signal that runs over your ordinary phone lines. The signal isn't in the audible range, so you can't hear it, and with filters that are supplied with your DSL installation the signal is kept from mixing with answering machines and other hardware attached to your phone line. After you set up DSL you can be connected to the internet all the time without it having any affect on using your phone normally. For DSL you need a DSL modem, and there are many DSL modems to choose from? How do you choose a DSL modem?

First of all, most internet service providers that you create a DSL account with will send you their own DSL modem; for example if you sign up for Verizon internet access they will give you the option of having a Verizon DSL modem shipped to you with the installation package. For many people, this is the easiest way of getting started. However if you want to try a different kind of modem, or a DSL router / DSL routers for your home or business such as a Westell DSL router, you can search for modem specs and details online by entering a search phrase such as 'DSL wireless router', 'wireless cable DSL Broadband router', 'a Westell DSL modem such as the Westell Infospeed DSL modem', 'Action Tec DSL modem', etc. To find the top-rated DSL modem or wireless DSL modem, you can check out DSLReports dot com for DSL modem reviews and info on local DSL plans and prices. If you have specific questions about protocols, such as adding wpa2 to a DSL modem, you can find info on that as well, although you may want to check out the support page for the specific type of modem you're thinking of buying to make sure that it will work.

Finally, there is always the option of going to a computer hardware store like Best Buy and getting a DSL modem in the box there. DSL is a standard technology so for the most part one DSL modem will work in place of another, but you may be able to find better prices and more reliable DSL modems with a little time spent researching the DSL modem online!
