Looking for the definition to a strange word? The world wide web is the ultimate dictionary! Not only do you have access to dictionaries for all different languages and time periods on the internet, you can also search multiple dictionaries at the same time by using an internet search engine to look for info on a word or term. Some popular world wide web search tools, such as Google, also have features where they will automatically give you a basic definition at the top of their search results if you search for a word together with the word 'define' or 'definition'.

Besides the number of primary dictionaries on the world wide web that you can immediately find links to by searching for a word, there are also more detailed encyclopedias on the internet. One of the most popular free encyclopedias is Wikipedia, a site that allows anyone who visits to add information on practically any definition. Wikipedia has a large staff of free contributors and people who help maintain the quality and accuracy of the entries, although it takes some time for certain high profile topics to be updated with new information (the pages that get the highest number of views have their new entries screened to prevent vandalism; this is also done in cases when groups of people start vandalizing a particular entry - editing is paused until the vandals subside). Wikipedia is one of the best sources for info on entertainment, historical or biographical subjects. You can learn a lot about a variety of topics just by going from link to link on Wikipedia and the simple, almost conversational style that results from having entries written by visiting volunteers makes it easier to read than many more scholarly sounding encyclopedias.

If you go to a major internet search engine such as Google and search for the word 'definition' on its own, you find both a list of dictionaries and a number of the most searched for definitions on the internet. Currently, these popular definitions include things such as Pod casting, blogs and open source software. Once you've found a topic that you are interested in, you can then search for it in any of the numerous dictionaries and encyclopedias on the world wide web, and go on to other topics from there. I wish you the best of luck in finding great resources for getting interesting definitions on the internet!
